Finding law firms that companies use for their transactional work can be a challenge. This information is not always available and can be difficult to uncover. Below are some resources, both paid and free, that I have used to search for legal advisors for company transactions.
Paid
- PitchBook: Allows you to view deals and investments for public and private companies.
- CapIQ: Allows you to view transactions for public and private companies.
- Preqin: Allows you to view deals for public and private companies.
- Bloomberg Law: Their Deal Analytics page allows you to view mergers and acquisitions for public and private companies.
Free
- sec.gov Company Filings: Public companies file reports with the SEC’s EDGAR system that lists their acquisitions and investments. However, I have yet to see a legal advisor listed.
- Company Website: A company’s website may mention a deal or transaction.
- News: Sometimes you can find news articles regarding a specific deal or transaction for a company, especially if it is big news.
These resources gather their information from a variety of sources, including news articles, regulatory findings, websites, press releases, filings, funds, and publications. Voluntary contributions (from fund managers, brokers, engineers, etc.) are also a source of data.
Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of resources, and the law firm a company used for a deal may not always be disclosed. Happy researching!
