As law libraries transition to an all-digital Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), some are choosing to weed parts of their tangible collection. Libraries can offer those unwanted items to other libraries via the FDLP eXchange. The program offers an automated way to make materials available to other libraries who may want or need the items for their own collections. The program will make the offers available to the regional library in one’s region first, then the selective libraries in the region, and finally nationally, if applicable.
The program offers the option to submit materials individually or in bulk, up to 249 titles per submission. If uploading in bulk, there is a spreadsheet template that must be used. Keep in mind that if you are submitting a significant number of offers, the regional library may be the first to review the offers so it is a good idea to reach out to your Regional Depository Librarian first to understand what is a reasonable amount of items for the regional library to review. They may also appreciate knowing that there will be an influx of offers for their review landing in the FDLP eXchange repository.
To get the information needed for the spreadsheet, it’s best to generate a list from your integrated library system and ensure that the needed information is retrieved in the list. Information can be copied into the required spreadsheet.
The FDLP eXchange is also the place to go if you are interested in acquiring a government document. Libraries can also post needed items in the exchange. The FDLP eXchange just launched version 1.2 on November 7, 2023.
