CRIV/ Wolters kluwer Semiannual call

December 12, 2023

Those attending were Vani Ungapen (AALL Executive Director); Michelle Hook Dewey (AALL-CRIV Board Liaison); Jeff Brandimarte (Wolters Kluwer Liaison); and Jane Bahnson (AALL CRIV Wolters Kluwer Board Liaison)

The meeting started at 2:00 p.m.

Vani and Michelle had no updates for the group from AALL.

Jeff provided some of the results from Wolters Kluwer’s Future Ready Lawyers’ Survey, including the following statistics: 73 percent of lawyers will be integrating generative AI into their practice, 43 pervent see it as presenting an opportunity, 25 percent view it as a potential threat, while 26 percent believe it could be both.

Wolters Kluwer is currently considering the creation of a generative AI product but is taking a careful approach, with no rollout planned at this time.

Jeff also addressed enhancements to some of Wolters Kluwer’s products, particularly RB Source Filings and Kluwer Arbitration. Both are separate product packages but they can also be purchased through VitalLaw. If in the VitalLaw package, there is a new analyzer product that will pull information from various purchased components that can provide comparisons and analytical feedback. This is available for both the RB Source filings and the labor and employment materials. In RB Source Filings, new analytics will retrieve changes in securities regulations over time and provide practical guidance in filling them out. In Kluwer arbitration, a “practice set” of content with tools for evaluating arbitrators and conflicts of interest through exploring their relationships has been added.

Jane forwarded four member questions for Jeff regarding Wolters Kluwer products that were received from AALL members:

Q:  What access is available for superseded treatises?

A: These can be added to a subscription. They are not included automatically, but can be purchased.

Q: Can individual resources be purchased separately and not as part of a bundle?

A: There is a movement toward bundling products in order to simplify and streamline the negotiation process. Most purchases are done in bundles but Jeff will check to see if either print or online materials may be purchased a la carte.

Q. It is possible to get ownership rights to material instead of usage licensure, so there is permanent access?

A: Materials sold as online products are only licensed. Print books are still being sold, but the bulk of sales are moving to e-materials and less to print.Q.  Is it possible to expand interlibrary loan capability for electronic materials?

A. Jeff is not sure but will look into this question.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 2:40 p.m.
